There are 26 cards in total. In addition to the question card shown in the image on this page, there are 25 objects that children may or may not possess. All the objects have the indefinite article ‘a’ in red to high light that it is a single object. (Articles are not used in many languages.) “A snake” is included as a joke.

In question games, it is good to have children physically hold the cards so that the ‘have’ target can be practiced in a real context. One idea is to give each child one or two cards facing down and they each have to ask “Do you have a _______?”  to the other students.

Here are a list of the cards:

a pencil, a ring, a bicycle, a watch, a yo-yo, a car, a cat, a computer, a dog, a doll, a goldfish, a guitar, a hamster, a house key, a pet, a stereo,  a turtle, a TV, a video game, a brother, a sister, a snake, a backpack, a wallet, a teddy bear.

These cards are meant to be printed on both sides of a heavier card stock and laminated to make them more durable. There is extra space on the left side of the cards so that they can be hole-punched and placed in students binders. (In Japan, I use Kokuyo B5 size binders for all students homework.)

There are 26 flash cards to teach the basic sounds of letters. This is the first stage of teaching phonics to children. The goal is to link the first sound of the words to the letters (phoneme to grapheme). On each card there is the lower-case letter with a large picture. Some teachers prefer to have images only on the cards for this first stage but I have found that they are not needed. Young children will focus on the pictures first anyway. They will then start to learn the letters through games where identification of the letters is important. If you prefer an image only set, please comment or send an email and I will try to make a set.

If you like the flash cards, please let me know in the comments! I love feedback.

I believe expressions like these are the absolute first step in learning any language. Even children can start having basic conversations from the very first class with common expressions. I usually use these cards in TPR (Total Phyisical Response) games and charades. You can also use them in pictionary style drawing games where children have to guess the word from a drawing.

Here is a list of the expressions in this flash card set:
Bathroom, please.
Be quiet.
Big voice.
Cute.
Excuse me.
Good afternoon.
Goodbye.
Good evening.
Good morning.
Good night.
Hello.
Help me.
Here you are.
Hurry up.
I don’t know.
I’m finished.
I’m sorry.
It’s delicious.
It’s scary.
I won.
Let’s play.
One more time.
See you later.
Thank you.
You’re welcome.

Most are self-explanatory. I added “cute” because Japanese children always say this when looking at picture books or stuffed animals. I added “it’s scary,” because children say this in block stacking games that I like to play in class. I also have a couple of toy snakes and a shark puppet that the kids love.

If you have any ideas or suggestions please leave them in the comments!

The cards are good to introduce countable and uncountable nouns. All the cards except for “peas” and “vegetables” are in the singular. The article “a” or “an” is included in all countable cards. This is a a good introduction to the difference between singular and plural and countable and uncountable.

Whenever you use these cards, remember to review likes by asking, “What is your favorite vegetable?” You can also practice colors by asking questions like, “What color are carrots?” or “What color is the carrot?” Be careful of how you use singular and plural so that your students get consistent and correct exposure to the language targets.

The fruit cards purposely have the plural “s” highlighted to show that they are indeed plural. This is also a great first step into phonics. Take the time and help children notice the letters of the words they see, even if they don’t have strong reading skills yet. Start with the first and last letter of the words and then slowly point out internal letters.

My main use of these cards is in games to introduce singular and plural. I use the vegetable cards for singular and fruit for plural.

My favorite game to play with the Family Flash Cards is “Treasure Hunt.”

The cards are also a great cue to ask about student’s families. I ask questions like:
How many people are in your family?
Do you have any brothers or sisters?
What is your mother’s name?
Can your mother drive a car?
Does your brother have a Nintendo Wii?
Does your sister like snakes?

Keep in mind that almost any flash card set or game can be used to review and practice a wide variety of targets. Strive to cover as many targets as you can with each activity. That will ensure your students get sufficient review to internalize the English.
